HERE is a tongue in cheek book that speaks of Germany and its neighbours, and thematises the diversity within German identity. What divides and what unifies us? What is experienced as foreign, and what is familiar? Between 2001 and 2004, I undertook a comprehensive tour of Germany with the author Helga Kurzchalia and the photographer Angelika Barz. We visited locations on the borders of all nine neighouring countries as well as previously restricted areas of the GDR. I work with design materials that refer to forms or official documents. I thereby emphasise on the one hand the apparant objectivity of the texts and photos, and on the other I address the question of borders. The design both parodies and embodies a sober matter-of-factness, alleged to be a characteristic trait of the German character.
